Notes Printed Over Bank of East TN Currency
Overview W. E. McClure, J. C. Warner, A Wbisehim and I. R. Schulland signed notes of this period as as president. W. D. Fulton signed all the notes of these periods as cashier. Some sources indicate W. E. McClure, J. C. Warner, A Wbisehim and I. R. Schulland signed for the president John Overton while other sources indicate they were bank presidents at the time. (Note: The spelling of A Wbisehim and I. R. Schulland may be incorrect.) The notes of 1862 were reduced in size and printed over Bank of East Tennessee unissued sheets of notes because of the shortage of good bank note paper. Most of the Bank of East Tennessee had red denomination reverse designs that can be seen on the face of the Bank of Chattanooga $1, $2 and $3 notes. Good bank note paper was not available because the blockade of the South halted importing it from Europe. These notes were the first Bank of Chattanooga notes payable in Confederate currency. Varieties of this type include notes printed in black and red ink. A unique overprinting error indicates the $1, 2, and 3 were printed on the same sheet. The reverse of the $1 G-53, $2 G-67 and $1 G-54 are shown rotated 90 degrees to indicate how they were printed over the Bank of East Tennessee $3 / $5 sheet.
